Livestock Courses Online

Animal husbandry or science has been practised for millennia, but never before has it been so under scrutiny as today. We live in a world where increasingly we need to challenge the values that drive contemporary livestock production. It is precisely this word – production – that gives the game away. Animals are used – and often abused – for what they can produce for us. But this never used to be the case. Throughout history livestock farmers have treated their animals as treasured possessions, to be looked after well and valued as individual creatures, not just as a collective group or flock. And they were justly rewarded for their care and labour. Unsurprisingly, the animals tended to thrive when treated well. But with the advent of intensive farming methods, these domesticated animals are often not treated as unique creatures, and are often not cared for in a natural environment closer to their own. Can animal husbandry ever be synonymous with animal welfare?

Get a Livestock qualification: ADL offer several courses in animal husbandry – giving you a sound knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology, and the breeding and care of all livestock from beef and dairy cattle and calf rearing, to pigs, poultry, sheep and goats.

Get a career working with Livestock: Whether you wish to become an animal breeder as a hobby or to run a part-time business or embark on a serious profession, there is much to learn. A good starting point is ADL's 'Animal Breeding' programme, which covers pets, farm animals, horses and wildlife.

Learn about Livestock: If you feel challenged about the intensive farming methods used today and would like to learn an alternative approach, why not look into ADL's Organic Farming course, which will give you the tools to manage animal production in an environmentally responsible way. ADL also offer an Advanced Certificate in Alternative Farming – which covers sustainable methods of agriculture and organic farming (including animal breeding).

Already work with Livestock, need Professional Development? For those wishing to develop a career requiring good animal care and management, relevant training and qualifications are always essential. ADL offer a variety of distance-learning courses to help get you started.
