Animal husbandry or science has been practised for millennia, but never before has it been so under scrutiny as today. We live in a world where increasingly we need to challenge the values that drive contemporary livestock production. It is precisely this word – production – that gives the game away. Animals are used – and often abused – for what they can produce for us. But this never used to be the case. Throughout history livestock farmers have treated their animals as treasured possessions, to be looked after well and valued as individual creatures, not just as a collective group or flock. And they were justly rewarded for their care and labour. Unsurprisingly, the animals tended to thrive when treated well. But with the advent of intensive farming methods, these domesticated animals are often not treated as unique creatures, and are often not cared for in a natural environment closer to their own. Can animal husbandry ever be synonymous with animal welfare?
