The hit musical, The Lion King, was a huge success and is still running in several different theaters across the world. The musical is based on the Disney film of the same name, a tale about a young lion cub forced into hiding for years before returning to claim his rightful place as leader of the pride.
Many young people now remember this film as one of their staple childhood favourites, however, not so many know that this film is actually based on the equally famous Shakespeare tragedy Hamlet. And by now, it should be no surprise that Hamletwas inspired by the Scandinavian legend, Amleth.
The tale of Amleth features a ruthless, pragmatic and pro-active protagonist who, having escaped his rapacious uncle's grasp, returns to exact meticulous revenge upon him and his court. He achieves all that he sets out to do. This is in sharp contrast to Hamlet's prince, who is uncertain about what he ought to do, whose feigned madness is almost a little too convincing and achieves the bare minimum of what he sought to complete. Our 20th Century version of the same story in the Lion King, features a reluctant but competent hero, who not only reveals his corrupt uncle's true nature to his contemporaries, but also claims his rightful place and restores peace to the land.
All versions of the same story are valid, and tracing them back from century to century is an excellent way to explore the Humanities. It reveals a lot about the values and culture of peoples throughout the ages and it is clear to see why the Humanities have come to be relied upon forsource material for many industries, not least the film, T.V. and publishing industry.
