Writing & Journalism

Writing and Journalism Courses Online

Journalist Jay Forman wrote an article on an extreme sport he named “Monkeyfishing”. He wrote the article in 2001 for Slate.com describing how, in the area of Lois Key island, local fishermen would hook fruit to their fishing lines and catch the Rhesus monkeys that inhabited the island. The monkeys were populous because they were bred specifically for medical research purposes. Once caught, they would be released again.

Questions began to arise from this story almost immediately after it was published, with many locals and the owners of the carefully bred monkeys expressing confusion about the nature of the sport, where it happened and how. It did not take much digging to understand that the freelance journalist had made the entire sport up. Yes, there were many monkey on the island, but that was as far as the truth got.

While the Monkeyfishing story was a potentially intriguing bit of fiction, the purpose of a journalist isn't to tell you a made up story. That is the writer's job. A good writer can drag you into their narrative and before you know it, you are turning pages and fully engrossed in what the writer is weaving.
