Health And Medical Careers & Jobs

HEALTH SCIENCES CAREERS AND JOBS

The UK's healthcare system in common with others around the world continues to grow; in terms of size, the National Health Service (NHS) is the largest publicly funded healthcare services in the world.

There is also a growing private healthcare system, though this is used by less than 8% of the population.

There are a lot of healthcare jobs! For example the NHS is the single greatest employer in the UK — directly employing more than 1.5 million people. The scope of the services offered by the healthcare systems is huge and there is a continual need for qualified and experienced staff to help with the provision of these services.

Opportunities to work in the health care system cover a wide variety of roles including:

  • Athletic training
  • Dental hygiene
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Emergency services
  • Health administration including medical secretaries and receptionists.
  • Health information management
  • Medical technology
  • Nursing assistants
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiography
  • Rehabilitation counselling
  • Speech and language therapy

A career in the health sciences could allow you to practice independently or to work as part of a team. You can begin your health sciences career as a technician trained to perform procedures under the supervision of therapists. Technician roles would include physical therapy assistants, medical laboratory technicians, radiological technicians and occupational therapy assistants.

Once employed as a technician you will have the opportunity to progress to becoming a therapist; needing to evaluate patients, diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and understand the rationale behind various treatments in order to judge their appropriateness and potential side effects.

The outlook for Allied Health professionals in the UK and overseas is extremely good. The sheer size of the healthcare service globally, together with a commitment to the provision of high quality services, means that there is always a strong demand for qualified workers.  Sign up to one of our health and medical sciences courses and take a step towards becoming a healthcare professional for the new global market.
