Learn About Geology
Immerse yourself in the fascinating study of geology, covering rocks, minerals, structural geology, geophysics, geobiology, geochemistry, groundwater hydrology and geological surveying.
The course covers practical aspects of geology, such as mining, farming, environmental management, and construction.
As a science, geology deals with the physical structure and composition of the earth, its make-up and the processes that affect its make-up.
You will come to recognise that changes to the geology of a site has to be made with the knowledge of the potential impact of any changes which may act on them.
Geological surveys and environmental assessments are often necessary and in some cases, legally required before any site can undergo changes, whether in construction, or for any other change of purpose, if different than its current accepted use.
Understanding the earth’s historical context in relation to minerals and formation, can provide knowledge that will allow us to determine what we could expect in the future.
There are many diverse ways where the study of geology can have real influence. Here are a few samples:
- Groundwater: – understanding and managing this valuable resource
- Managing mining appropriately
- Geologic natural hazards e.g. landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions – provide a better understanding of these natural phenomena
- Seismic Activity – identifying and forecasting
- Defining engineering works that are applicable in the construction of dams, various infastrucure and buildings to name a few.
- Locating deposits of specific rocks and minerals
- Understanding climate changes from the past
- Expanding our knowledge of how the earth formed and plate tectonics (movements of the plates on the earths crustThe study of geology focuses on the earth, the rocks, the materials from which the earth is made, their structures, and the processes that cause them to change over time. This online Geology course focuses on the surface and below-surface structures of the earth.Hydrology and climate science also overlap with geology. By understanding geology, we can learn about the earth’s historical materials and formation and also anticipate what might happen in the future based on that knowledge.

Program Summary
More Information
As A Science, Geology Uses A Range Of Tools And Testing Methods.
Field work
Field work is amongst the many tools and models used by geologists. This involves going to sites and observing rocks, taking samples, conducting experiments, mapping, and more. It is an important means of collecting data and informing theory.
Mapping is done to provide geological maps of an area depicting types of rocks and their locations and might help inform mining companies. Geotechnical mapping shows the relative strengths and weaknesses of an area and might help inform construction projects.
Sampling might be undertaken via drilling or by various types of logging. Core logging is used by mining companies. Geotechnical logging reveals the strength of underground rocks from core samples. Oil and gas exploration use mud logging.
Laboratory Testing
Not all experiments are conducted in situ. Rocks and materials may be retrieved for experimentation, testing or sampling in the laboratory.
Geomechanical testing may be undertaken to determine the strength of rocks. Geochemical analyses determine content of rocks. Other work might involve examining rocks under a microscope.
Geochronology
Geology tests rocks using methods that reveal the age of rocks and how they were formed. This branch of geology is known as ‘geochronology’. Absolute geochronology measures radioactive isotopes to provide a specific date or date range for specific rock formations.
Relative geochronology uses other methods such as evaluating the way the sediment layers have built up in specific rock formations and comparing them to others. This gives insight into the historical order of events without providing a specific date.
Chemical Analysis
The branch of geology known as geochemistry uses chemical analysis of rocks and minerals to help explain things like the composition of meteorites, structures of crystals, groupings of elements, and the functioning of geological systems like the earth’s crust.
Petrology
Petrology is the branch of geology concerned with understanding the conditions under which rocks are formed. It describes the texture and composition of rocks using mineralogy, petrography, and chemical analysis. It can be broken down further into branches that deal with the three main types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic).
Computer Analysis
Most geologists use various types of computer software in their work. This can include producing and maintaining computer databases and spreadsheets e.g. of mapped data, test data, etc. Geographical information systems (GIS) is a specific database used for mapping.
Computer modelling is also increasingly utilised by geologists. Modelling can be used in different ways e.g. to predict seismic activity, the effects of mining on subsurface stability, or to produce 3-D images of rock formations…
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.Â
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.
How our courses work
- Choose Your Learning Method
You choose how you would like to receive your course material, i.e., Online, USB or Correspondence. The choice is yours. You may also work on online or offline. - Tutor Allocation
Every student is assigned their own dedicated tutor who is an expert in their subject area. They provide as much or as little individual contact as you require. You can contact your tutor whenever you need – your hours are not limited. - Feedback and Assignments
Tutor Feedback is an essential component in helping you understand the subject matter. Tutor feedback is given in the form of notes written on the assignment. We encourage you to contact your Tutor where help with clarification and understanding of course material may be required.
Your assignments are located at the end of each lesson. You submit them for marking whenever you are ready. There is no time limit.  - Set Tasks and Self-Tests
Most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson before for the assignment. This is where you get the opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge, skills and practical experience. Many modules also have short Self-Tests. - Exams
Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this. - Design Your Own Qualification
ADL offers students the flexibility to self-design their own qualification – bundling together a combination of 100-hour modules into a qualification higher than a certificate.
