Learn About Alternative Education
Diploma in Alternative Education course online
A different pedagogical approach to mainstream pedagogy.
More parents are rejecting mainstream education and its reliance on a teacher led philosophy, in favour of an arguably better one where the learner takes control of his or her own learning.
Although many people will be able to gain the education they need in a state-run or private school, there will be others who fail to reach their full potential, simply because the system doesn’t suit their style of learning.
An example of this is a person who struggled in the school system, left to take up homeschooling, passed alternative qualifications to G.C.S.Es and A levels, attained a degree at university (First Class) and then studied for her Masters.
This true educational biography of a young lady from the UK, perfectly illustrates the benefits of alternative education for some children.
However, home education is just one aspect of alternative education. A different educational philosophy is also employed by independent schools, with an emphasis on smaller class sizes and a community spirit between students and teachers, rather than the hierarchical one in normal schools.
An alternative education suits professional development and self-education. Often unregulated courses in non-standard subjects such as herpetology or ecotourism, play a big part in helping people into work with specialised knowledge and skills that may not be available through government-endorsed qualifications.
For all the reasons above, if you are a parent or an employer, you may sometimes seek a different kind of learning; perhaps one that is more focused on the capacity to be innovative and creative and less focused on learning facts and skills.
Or you may require learning that is more based on developing problem-solving skills.
There is a worldwide increase in demand for more flexible forms of delivering alternative or multi-model education. We have designed this course for educators and trainers who want to develop the skills and broader perspective, that will help them meet these new and changing demands.
It will help you develop alternative education strategies and alternative educational options, to meet the changing needs of students and employers.

- The completion of an Industry Project or Work Experience are necessary components to complete in order to satisfy our qualification requirement. There are two options available to you to satisfy this requirement:Alternative 1.If you work in the industry that you have been studying; you may submit a reference from your employer, in an effort to satisfy this industry (ie. workplace project) requirement; on the basis of RPL (ie. recognition for prior learning), achieved through your current and past work experience. The reference must indicate that you have skills and an awareness of your industry, which is sufficient for you to work in a position of responsibility.Alternative 2.
If you do not work in the relevant industry, you need to undertake a project as follows.
Procedure for a Workplace Project
This project is a major part of the course involving the number of hours relevant to the course (see above). Although the course does not contain mandatory work requirements, work experience is seen as highly desirable.
This project is based on applications in the work place and specifically aims to provide the student with the opportunity to apply and integrate skills and knowledge developed through various areas of formal study.
You will design this project in consultation with your tutor to involve industry based activities in the area of specialised study which you select to follow in the course. The project outcomes may take the form of a written report, folio, visuals or a mixture of forms. If you have relevant, current or past work experience, you will be given exemption from this project if you can provide suitable references from employers that show you have already fulfilled the requirements of this project.
You will be assessed on how well you achieve the goals and outcomes you originally set as part of your negotiations with your tutor. You will present three short progress reports. These progress reports will be taken into account when evaluating the final submission. The tutor must be satisfied that the work that you submit is original.

Program Summary
More Information
Assessment
Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.Â
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.
How our courses work
- Choose Your Learning Method
You choose how you would like to receive your course material, i.e., Online, USB or Correspondence. The choice is yours. You may also work on online or offline. - Tutor Allocation
Every student is assigned their own dedicated tutor who is an expert in their subject area. They provide as much or as little individual contact as you require. You can contact your tutor whenever you need – your hours are not limited. - Feedback and Assignments
Tutor Feedback is an essential component in helping you understand the subject matter. Tutor feedback is given in the form of notes written on the assignment. We encourage you to contact your Tutor where help with clarification and understanding of course material may be required.
Your assignments are located at the end of each lesson. You submit them for marking whenever you are ready. There is no time limit.  - Set Tasks and Self-Tests
Most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson before for the assignment. This is where you get the opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge, skills and practical experience. Many modules also have short Self-Tests. - Exams
Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this. - Design Your Own Qualification
ADL offers students the flexibility to self-design their own qualification – bundling together a combination of 100-hour modules into a qualification higher than a certificate.
