Health & Leisure II course online: Build on what you learned in our prerequisite Health & Fitness I course by acquiring skills in creating guidelines for weights training, developing exercise programs, leading a fitness course and undertaking required testing.
You will also learn to manage fitness testing services plus gain a sound understanding of how and why cardiovascular responses are different from person to person. You can be sure that the information you will receive is up-to-date, because the program has been recently revised by highly qualified industry professionals with specialist knowledge.
A major challenge to someone returning to vigorous exercise, is overcoming the initial discomfort and lack of stamina they will inevitably experience. It may take a couple of weeks of exercising on a regular basis before a person sees an improvement in their fitness levels and this is true for all age and gender groups.
There is also an element of danger involved if a person's initial enthusiasm means that they push themselves too far when working out and become ill. Health and Fitness Practitioners therefore need to maintain a balance between encouraging clients to continue exercising at the same time as managing how much they do and ensuring they don't do too much to soon.
As exercisers gets fitter, their mental and physical well-being improves. Their endurance and stamina levels increase and as a consequence, they are able to achieve more day by day. In addition, clients will be able to participate more in physical activities such as running and sport, significantly contributing to a better quality of life in general. As well as physical benefits to a "get fit" campaign, there are undoubtedly also psychological benefits due to the sense of achievement people feel immediately after exercising.
The possible psychological benefits observed in controlled studies include: an increase in extroversion, self‑awareness, self‑confidence and improvements in the memory recall of older people.
Getting fit is a win win situation, because provided exercise levels are increased gradually, it is extremely unlikely that your client will suffer any ill effects.

Each lesson culminates in an assignment which is submitted to the school, marked by the school's tutors and returned to you with any relevant suggestions, comments, and if necessary, extra reading.

- Manage fitness testing services to a standard practiced in gymnasiums and health clubs.

Practicals: Health & Fitness II BRE201
- Explain symptoms of common problems that may occur during exercise,including: dizziness, hyperventilation, nausea or asthma and describe procedures to follow in response to problems occurring during exercise
- List physiological characteristics which can be used to indicate a persons health and fitness level.
- Compare anaerobic with aerobic energy systems.
- Explain how cardiovascular responses may vary, according to varying intensities of specific type of exercise.
- Explain the physiology of muscular fatigue related to varying levels of exercise.
- Explain factors related to hypertrophy/atrophy of muscle tissue, in a specific situation.
- Differentiate between a fitness assessment undertaken by a fitness leader and a comprehensive assessment of health carried out by a health practitioner.
- Explain the purpose, including limitations, of fitness testing in a summary.
- Explain procedures to manage legal liability when conducting fitness tests in your locality.
- Analyse the results of fitness tests conducted.
- Explain the proper use of five different resistance training machines; in accordance with manufacturers instructions and identify hazards associated with use of different items of resistance training equipment.
- Develop guidelines for the care of weight training equipment.
- Compare the use of a specified weight machine by three different people in an analytical report.
- Prepare using illustrations, and step by step instructions, a modified exercise program.
- Explain the exercise program you developed.
- Explain different motivational techniques and counselling techniques which are appropriate to use during, fitness instruction.
- Explain an appropriate style of leadership to use during fitness instruction in a specified situation which you are familiar with.
- Explain the use of teaching principles to explaining a specific exercise technique.
- Explain differences in approach to leading different numbers of people in a fitness session and demonstrate leading a fitness session with a group of four or more participants.
Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.
How our courses work
- Choose Your Learning Method
You choose how you would like to receive your course material, i.e., Online, USB or Correspondence. The choice is yours. You may also work on online or offline.
- Tutor Allocation
Every student is assigned their own dedicated tutor who is an expert in their subject area. They provide as much or as little individual contact as you require. You can contact your tutor whenever you need – your hours are not limited.
- Feedback and Assignments
Tutor Feedback is an essential component in helping you understand the subject matter. Tutor feedback is given in the form of notes written on the assignment. We encourage you to contact your Tutor where help with clarification and understanding of course material may be required.
Your assignments are located at the end of each lesson. You submit them for marking whenever you are ready. There is no time limit.
- Set Tasks and Self-Tests
Most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson before for the assignment. This is where you get the opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge, skills and practical experience. Many modules also have short Self-Tests.
Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this.
- Design Your Own Qualification
ADL offers students the flexibility to self-design their own qualification – bundling together a combination of 100-hour modules into a qualification higher than a certificate.
