Learn About Healthy Aging
Healthy Aging: Discover the Benefits!
A healthy diet, regular exercise, a positive attitude and regular health checks all contribute to aging well.
Through the choices we make and the actions we take, we can better manage our bodies and minds as we age.
Keeping well-nourished and physically active are key, but along with aging comes the responsibility of monitoring wellbeing and responding early to issues.
Is this course something you’d like to pursue?
If you are managing your own aging, or that of someone in your family, you may want to know more about healthy aging. Many other people will take this course as part of their training for working with elderly people. A course like this is ideal as a professional development program for those who work with aging or with the elderly.
The aging process differs from person to person
In addition to your genetics and surroundings, your attitude and actions also heavily influence your mental and physical state.
The number of years that a person has lived is not the only indicator of how old he or she is. As we age, we grow older at different times in our lives. We age for many reasons and to varying degrees.
In this way, older people are diverse. The bodies of some people age more slowly than others, whereas others are subject to common degeneration.  Ageing, as a process, is affected by a variety of circumstances in life.
The body can undergo more molecular and cellular damage in a person’s 40s than say, in their 60s or 70s. If you have a greater awareness of the aging process, aging then can be a slower and easier process. Understanding the factors that influence the quality of life, will help you learn how to manage those factors better.
IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR YOU?
A person who works with adults might benefit from this course:

Older people can improve their mental and physical health in a number of ways. It may be the preference of some to use traditional therapies, while others may prefer alternative therapies, or a combination of the two.

Monitoring Health Events and Specialists
Health events do occur and the need to see a medical specialist can arise more often as you age. A health event could be anything from breathlessness or fainting, to diabetes, severe back pain or a cancer scare. Such events can lead to investigations, diagnosis and/or treatment by a specialist physician.
Some serious conditions may require ongoing treatments for life. Others might not. Even in the case of issues that are overcome (e.g., cancer going into remission); the probability of an occurrence is likely to be an ongoing risk, hence periodic investigations, and monitoring (e.g., scans or blood tests), may be advised.
For older people, it can become unsettling to be investigated with equipment and techniques which they are unfamiliar with, then have results explained to them which they are challenged to understand.
It is a heathier and less stressful situation for an aged person to understand what they are going through; and to be aware that their loved ones also understand. In the case of serious events, ensure the aged person is accompanied to physician appointments by a relative or friend who has the capacity to grasp and remember details provided by the physician.
Blood Tests
Complete Blood Count – A calculation of the cellular (formed elements) of blood; generally determined by specially designed machines that analyse the different components of blood in less than a minute. Also known as a Full Blood Count or FBC.
Radiology (Xray, MRI, CAT Scan, PET Scan)
CAT (Computerised Axial Tomography) Scanning is a procedure that produces images of structures within the body created by a computer that takes data from multiple X-ray images and turns them in pictures on a screen.
Xray – The data arising out of these tests can be useful in supporting a diagnosis. However, the radiologist’s reports can only focus on what was seen in the scan. They are unlikely to hold all the contextual data provided by the detailed case history.
These are frequently the diagnostic method of choice when skeletal injuries are suspected, although they can also be used to diagnose tumours and some other soft tissue disorders. An X ray will produce a ‘negative’ of the internal structures of the back, with any fractures (for example) appearing as voids in the related areas.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR/MRI) is non-invasive imaging technology. It can provide comprehensive information on brain anatomy and function. It can also be used on other parts of the body such as soft tissues of muscles and ligaments, nerves, or cartilage.
PET (positron emission tomography) Scanning is a powerful imaging model. It provides detailed assessment of anatomical or functional abnormalities seen in the central nervous system – usually the brain. It can provide detection and understanding of conditions such as Alzheimer’s dementia (and normal aging).
Other Diagnostics
Colonoscopy – Procedure using a viewing tube that enables an examiner to evaluate the appearance of the inside of the colon (the part of the large intestine between the caecum and the rectum). The suffix refers to the instrument used, the prefix to the area being examined.
Coronary Angiogram – The most precise method for evaluating and defining coronary artery disease (CAD). Angio refers to the blood vessels, coronary to the heart.
Arthroscopy – Surgical procedure where the internal structure of the joints is examined for diagnosis and/or treatment. The prefix Arthro refers to the joint, the suffix refers to the hollow, lighted instrument (scope) used to view the internal area.
Bone Density Scan – A screening and monitoring test for osteoporosis and bone density.
Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.Â
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.
- Choose Your Learning Method
You choose how you would like to receive your course material, i.e., Online, USB or Correspondence. The choice is yours. You may also work on online or offline. - Tutor Allocation
Every student is assigned their own dedicated tutor who is an expert in their subject area. They provide as much or as little individual contact as you require. You can contact your tutor whenever you need – your hours are not limited. - Feedback and Assignments
Tutor Feedback is an essential component in helping you understand the subject matter. Tutor feedback is given in the form of notes written on the assignment. We encourage you to contact your Tutor where help with clarification and understanding of course material may be required.
Your assignments are located at the end of each lesson. You submit them for marking whenever you are ready. There is no time limit.  - Set Tasks and Self-Tests
Most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson before for the assignment. This is where you get the opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge, skills and practical experience. Many modules also have short Self-Tests. - Exams
Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this. - Design Your Own Qualification
ADL offers students the flexibility to self-design their own qualification – bundling together a combination of 100-hour modules into a qualification higher than a certificate.
