Learn About Small Appliances Machine and Equipment Repair
Learn how small appliances, equipment and machines work and the components that usually break and how you can repair these items yourself. This course covers the parts, tools and safety considerations for fixing small appliances yourself.
This course is relevant to a wide range of equipment used by people in any situation: home, work, or play. It covers equipment powered by motors or engines, both portable and fixed.
The course is relevant to not only machines, but also appliances that might not be categorised as machines, such as heaters, air conditioners and refrigerators.
Many equipment problems can occur on lots of different types of equipment. Components can wear out. Materials which equipment is made from can deteriorate (e.g., Rust, corrode, loose strength) Moving parts can lose integrity as they rub against each other. Joined parts can become loosened (e.g., Screws or bolts loosening glues weakening). Sealings can begin to leak.
Routine maintenance of equipment can to some extent mitigate deterioration
If you want to become more self-sufficient, start your own appliance repair business or learn to expand your professional knowledge, this course offers a wonderful opportunity to learn an invaluable new skill.

IT PAYS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR EQUIPMENT
Equipment that is built well using the very best materials may have fewer issues; but often equipment may be built using materials that are not optimum, – built with a recognition that they have a limited lifespan.
Whenever you examine a piece of equipment, consider the quality (and cost) of:
- Materials it is built from.
- Its components.
- Its design quality.
Sometimes equipment or components are not worth repairing – Be realistic and pragmatic
- If a cheap motor is damaged – perhaps replace rather than repair.
- If a cheap appliance is damaged, maybe replace the whole appliance.
Terminology
Machines are pieces of equipment designed and built to perform a specific job more easily than what that job could be performed without the machine. The term machines refer to bigger applications.
Appliances are applications of machines but in a smaller level. For example, home appliances such as a microwave oven.
Electrical equipment indicates any appliance, fitting, or material that is operated by electricity or used for controlling, generating, supplying, transforming, or transmitting electricity.
Small machines are used in both domestic and work situations. Domestic machines can include outdoor equipment such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers, or indoor equipment
SCOPE AND NATURE OF SMALL EQUIPMENT REPAIR
Small equipment repair incorporates the maintenance and repair of non-specialist equipment. The kind of equipment that an individual may have at home and/or is readily accessible and used by a range of people.
With any of the pieces of equipment or appliances discussed in this course the first and best course of action in maintaining them will be to apply and adhere to a robust maintenance schedule. Whether this means service activities on a planned basis or thorough cleaning and stowage after each use, proper maintenance will improve the function and extend the life of the equipment.
Should the device stop working the information in this course aims to provide a basis for feeling confidant in investigating the issue and to provide some more detailed explanation for a range of common repairs.
With any repair that is required it is important to remember to be safe and methodical in your approach.
Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.Â
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.
- Choose Your Learning Method
You choose how you would like to receive your course material, i.e., Online, USB or Correspondence. The choice is yours. You may also work on online or offline. - Tutor Allocation
Every student is assigned their own dedicated tutor who is an expert in their subject area. They provide as much or as little individual contact as you require. You can contact your tutor whenever you need – your hours are not limited. - Feedback and Assignments
Tutor Feedback is an essential component in helping you understand the subject matter. Tutor feedback is given in the form of notes written on the assignment. We encourage you to contact your Tutor where help with clarification and understanding of course material may be required.
Your assignments are located at the end of each lesson. You submit them for marking whenever you are ready. There is no time limit.  - Set Tasks and Self-Tests
Most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson before for the assignment. This is where you get the opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge, skills and practical experience. Many modules also have short Self-Tests. - Exams
Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this. - Design Your Own Qualification
ADL offers students the flexibility to self-design their own qualification – bundling together a combination of 100-hour modules into a qualification higher than a certificate.
