This Irrigation Management (Agriculture) distance learning course is an extension of the skills and knowledge achieved in Irrigation (Agricultural) BAG213 or an equivalent course. Students learn to develop their ability to participate in the design and operation of large scale irrigation systems for agricultural applications.
Prerequisites: Irrigation (Agriculture) BAG213 or equivalent (BHT210 or BHT304) must be completed prior to commencing this course.
There should be plenty of water for everyone… however three controlling factors: very unequal distribution, rapidly rising demand and increasing pollution around urban and industrial areas means that some areas of the planet are already using water at a greater rate than it is being replenished. This includes parts of Western Australia, and parts of NSW and Victoria. Water management will become increasingly important to try and cater for the increasing demand for useable water.
The aim of irrigation management is to reuse water as much as possible, to collect and store as much water as possible, and to ensure that what water you do use is used in an efficient manner. This course builds on Irrigation BAG213. It teaches you to manage the design and operation of large scale irrigation systems.

Managing Irrigation Systems Both Small and Large.
MAINTENANCE OF WATERING SYSTEMS
Regular maintenance of your watering system will increase both the efficiency of water distribution and the life of the system.
Check:
- Plastic components. These will eventually deteriorate through exposure to ultra-violet rays – replace parts which show signs of splitting, old age etc.
- Metal components. Prevent rust formation. Oil parts which begin to rust.
- Filters. Filters in trickle systems should be flushed out regularly to prevent blockages occurring through build ups of soil particles and growth of algae.
- Pipes and nozzles in trickle systems. If blockages do occur flush the system with a chlorine based solution (e.g. liquid sodium hypochloride – 10% chlorine) to destroy bacteria.
- Controllers (i.e. time clocks). These need to be tested every few months to make sure they are working properly.
SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
System Maintenance is important to maintain system quality. Through regular maintenance of an irrigation system large scale costs will be avoided, which otherwise may have occurred in a breakdown of the system.
Maintenance can range from the farmer who travels around their farm on a motorbike, shovel at hand to dealwith any breaches in channel walls to an intensive program of oiling and testing every aspect of the irrigation process, usually during the off season.
Further to this, sprinklers may wear, pipes may corrode or, in the case of plastics, can develop punctures or breaks at the seals or joins. Water pressures can be easily checked, whereas pumps might require specialised attention.
MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES AND SCHEDULING
Maintenance of equipment is carried out to prevent costly breakdowns. Maintenance programs can be divided into three groups:
- Periodic equipment inspections to find out conditions that could lead to breakdowns or too much depreciation
- Upkeep to remedy such conditions
- Contingency work
These activities may include component testing, job planning, and scheduling of repairs. This can lead to fewer system breakdowns which in turn results in:
- A decrease in production down time
- Fewer large-scale or repetitive repairs
- Lower costs for simple repairs made before breakdowns (because less manpower, fewer skills, and fewer parts are needed)
- Less overtime pay on ordinary adjustments and repairs than for system breakdown repairs
- Less stand-by equipment
Periodic Inspections
Periodic inspections are the best way to achieve a preventative maintenance program. Thus unsatisfactory conditions are discovered and corrected in their early stages. Frequency of inspections depends upon the amount and degree of use and will vary from one area to another.
The best frequency cycle can be established by analysing the equipment based on:
- Age
- Condition
- Value
- Amount of use
- Safety requirements
- Number of hours or mileage operated
- Susceptibility to wear, damage, and loss of adjustment
These inspections should be carried out at a garage by personnel trained in this kind of work. During these inspections, every moving part of the equipment should be checked, and worn parts should be removed and replaced. Following proper inspection, the irrigation system and equipment should be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated.
Routine Upkeep
Routine upkeep of irrigation includes such chores as replacing damaged sprinklers or drip ends, sealing burst pipes, and so on. Water wastage and potential problems can be averted if they are attended to quickly. It is the responsibility of the operator to assess anything which should be corrected and they should report it to the irrigation owner in large scale irrigation operations.
Contingent Work
Contingent work includes the repair of major breakdowns and general overhauls of equipment. At the same time, a regular inspection should be completed and all worn and broken parts should be removed and replaced.
Scheduling Work
Maintenance work can be scheduled by using overall charts for all equipment and individual cards for each piece of equipment. The overall chart gives a quick picture of the workload.
This chart lists the days or months across the top of the chart and an itemised list of equipment down the left side.
A system of symbols can be devised to show different types of repairs, adjustments to be made to each piece of equipment. The relevant symbols are marked under the date the activity is to be carried out, and opposite the piece of equipment that is to be worked on.
The individual cards for each piece of equipment allow for greater details to be recorded. All repairs, both major and minor, and maintenance, should be recorded on the card, and include a list of materials and parts used and time required.
MAINTAINING YOUR TRICKLE IRRIGATION

Assessment is based on a combination of completing all assignments and sitting for a final short one and a half hour exam, in your own location.
If you don’t cope well with exams then you may elect to undertake a project instead. This is a popular option.
In addition, most modules have a Set Task at the end of each lesson placed before the assignment. This is an opportunity to undertake practical work to help you acquire knowledge and skills and practical experience. This ADL feature is an added bonus not found at most online schools. Set Tasks are not required for assessment.Â
Some courses also have optional Self-Tests which are available on our online learning platform. These are not available by correspondence or by USB, and do not form part of your overall grade.

Once all assignments have been completed you may then elect to sit for a one and half hour exam in your own location. If you prefer not to take the exam you do have the option to undertake a project instead.
Once the exam or project part of the course is completed, your Certificate is then processed. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for this. - Design Your Own Qualification

Assessment
Q. Assessment – how does it work?
A. For each 100 hour module you are assessed by assignments (at the end of each lesson) and a final one and a half hour exam (or you may elect to complete a Project, instead of sitting the exam) – the choice is yours – you sit for the exam in your own location.
Q. I don’t cope well with exams – what can I do?
A. You may elect to undertake a Project (set by your tutor) instead of sitting the exam. Projects are completed from your home and can usually take a couple of weeks to complete.
Q. If my assignment is not up to standard is there an opportunity to resubmit my work?
A. Yes –
Q. How many assignments do I need to complete for each module?
A. At the end of each lesson, there is an assignment – so if a course has say, 10 lessons, there would be 10 assignments.

A. If your course requires attendance at workshops, conferences, or industry meetings; alternative arrangements can be made in your country.

Q. What qualification will I receive?
A. For individual modules, you would be awarded a Certificate endorsed by TQUK (Training Qualifications, UK), providing you complete all assignments and the exam.
