Wildlife Conservation Courses Online

The generation of the 70s grew up hearing little about endangered species.  We knew about the ill-fated dodo of course.  The dodo, we were told, had been discovered by man a long time ago (in 1598) – and within 80 years of that discovery, the poor, defenceless creature had become extinct.

Of course the dodo’s demise was preceded by many other species before it.  Since primeval times, creatures have been dying out: the Cave lion, Mammoth, American camel, Giant beaver and Ground sloth all preceded the Irish Elk.  Then came the last dwarf elephant...  And so it has continued throughout human history.  These species disappeared mainly because of excessive human hunting, and in addition, in more recent history, habitat loss.

Today the list of endangered species on our planet cannot be summarised in a neat little paragraph – no one can keep track of the precious varieties of creatures that are quietly slipping away, never to be seen again.  We can list those at the top of the list – Arctic polar bears, tigers, Giant pandas, Magellanic penguins, Leatherback turtles, Bluefin tuna, Mountain gorillas, Javan rhinos – and learn that all these species are dying out because of man:  man poaching, man over-fishing, man developing natural habitat...and man-induced global warming.

The Academy for Distance Learning has a history of supporting wildlife projects. The world renowned Conservationist David Youldon, Chief Operating Officer of AFRICA NEEDS LIONS www.lionalert.org, completed our Advanced Certificate in Wildlife Management and with previous qualifications, went on to study a Masters in Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health at Edinburgh University. He was also accepted for a short course in Data Analysis in Ecology at the University of Oxford.

Currently we have the Primate Naturalist: Karin Saks, studying our Primatology course. Karin has been fostering and rehabilitating orphan baboons, caring for injured monkeys returned to the wild, plus promoting a harmonious co-existence between primates and humans since 1997. She also founded The Darwin Primate Group as a non-profit organisation in 2008 and in 2014, moved to Kwazulu Natal to research the endangered samango monkey populations in the Midlands. You are welcome to watch her online video: Co-existing Peacefully With Baboons/Monkeys and read her Blogspot on the Samango Monkey Project. If you want to support Karin in her work financially or practically, please contact us and we will happily pass your details on.

As you can see, our courses are highly respected by conservationists actually working in the field to help save the wildlife of our world, so you really can trust ADL to help you develop the knowledge and skills you need, to get involved in the environmental welfare of animals.

Get qualified:  If you want to find out more about wildlife conservation and how to get involved, why not start by enrolling on an ADL home study course.  There are many to choose from, including Wildlife Conservation and Conservation of UK Protected Species, Marine Pollution and Wildlife Management.

Change of Career:  There could be few jobs more rewarding than helping to save dying breeds – whether our own known and familiar species of wildlife or more exotic ones.  ADL offer a distance-learning course in Wildlife Management – which covers the manipulation of wild animal populations and their habitats for the benefit of both humans and wildlife.  This is a great foundation for those wanting to work in conservation in zoos or the wild and in captive specialists breeding programmes.

Learn Something New:  If you are passionate about conservation but would like to learn more, then ADL run many online courses covering basic ecology and environmental problems such as pollution and land degradation, as well as different aspects of conservation (animal, marine and vegetation).

Professional Development:  ADL offer several online courses that can help to advance your career in the field of conservation, including an Advanced Certificate in Wildlife Management and a Dipoma in Wildlife Management.  What you learn here can be applied to the diverse species of wildlife around the world, and will help you to explore ways to protect environments and ecosystems.
