In 1829, the locomotive Rocket beat its competitors at the Rainhill Trials to become the engine of choice for the new Liverpool and Manchester railway. The engine travelled at up to 28 miles per hour, hauling up to 13 tons of cargo along a one mile section of track. In 2017, the first trans-continental train from China arrived in Barking, UK, having travelled over 12,000 miles from the eastern city of Yiwu, carrying products made in China to British markets.
Each is a feat in its own time and each is only made possibly by the skilled engineers whose ability makes such a thing possible. Engineers build and maintain the world around us, designing and building everything, from simple home toasters and light bulbs, to space satellites so advanced they can land on a comet in motion in deep space.
There is always a demand for skilled engineers and firms will often go to great lengths to acquire talent from abroad to make up for shortfalls in their own home nations. In the UK alone, it is thought that 186.000 new engineers will be needed in the coming years. Well paid and demanding, it is a popular vocation that requires the best out of its workforce, who often, in the nature of their work, hold the lives of the people using their creation in their hands.
